Improving phenotyping in winter barley cultivars towards waterlogging tolerance by combining field trials under natural conditions with controlled growth condition experiments

چکیده

Additional rainfall in Northern Europe due to global climate change is increasing the incidences of field flooding. Flooding causes hypoxic stress that results a reduced capacity for photosynthesis, reduction nutrient availability and uptake, increased production toxic metabolites by anaerobic bacteria soil, ultimately yield losses crop death. To overcome environmental conditions, new cultivars need be bred tested waterlogging tolerance. We scored 403 winter barley from ‘Association Genetics UK Elite Barley’ (AGOUEB) population, taking advantage phenotypic changes associated with stress. This enabled us identify an initial set sensitive tolerant cultivars. Comparative analysis subset 65 exposed under growth cabinet environments showed variability scores varying sensitivity over multi-season trials. In trials, we observed damage resulting reductions biomass, grain height. However, effects varied between seasons severity differences topography amount rainfall. seasonal variations conditions developed parallel, enhanced phenotyping method complementing experiments controlled conditions. The scoring allows grouping tolerance waterlogging, limited variance Together, these two complementary approaches maximise data available breeders, allowing reliable selection more able grow flooding

Non-destructive Phenotyping to Identify Brachiaria Hybrids Tolerant to Waterlogging Stress under Field Conditions

Brachiaria grasses are sown in tropical regions around the world, especially in the Neotropics, to improve livestock production. Waterlogging is a major constraint to the productivity and persistence of Brachiaria grasses during the rainy season. While some Brachiaria cultivars are moderately tolerant to seasonal waterlogging, none of the commercial cultivars combines superior yield potential a...

Improving barley performance by proper foliar applied salicylic-acid under saline conditions

Despite general effect of salicylic-acid (SA) in improving plant growth andproductivity in saline conditions, there have not been unanimity about the bestconcentration. In this 2-yr field study the effect of different SA concentrations(0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 mM) was examined on growth, grain yield and yieldcomponents of barley under two non-saline (2 dS m-1) and saline (12 dS m-1)conditions. ...

Evaluation of the Dry Matter Remobilization to Seeds in Winter Rapeseed Cultivars under Drought Stress Conditions

In order to evaluate dry matter remobilization to seeds in the winter type rapeseed cultivars grown under drought stress conditions, an experiment was carried out using a randomized complete block design arranged in a split plot with three replicates in Shahre-Qods, Iran, in the 2011-2012 growing season. Irrigation treatments including control (irrigation after 80 mm evaporation from evaporatio...
